MODULE 3 – COURSE OBJECTIVES and SUMMARY for CEUs

MODULE 3 – COURSE SUMMARY

In recent years, Somatic Awareness has become an important skill set for clinicians. Pioneering work of trauma clinicians such as Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk have demonstrated that our thoughts, emotions and instinctive physical responses all play an important role in regulating our responses to daily events, loss, anxiety, achievement and trauma. Successful treatment requires conscious practice which combines mental, emotional and body intelligence.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand the concept and operation of the personal “blind spot” (avoidance) which reduces self awareness.  Identify the personal defense mechanism that is triggered during stress.
  2. How to teach clients to manage hyper-arousal using somatic self-awareness.
  3. Understand the function of the sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems in regulating personal stress.
  4. Learn the operation of somatic hyper-aroused energy (fight, flight, freeze)and how it stabilizes with appropriate attention.
  5. Understand the influence of mental, emotional and somatic intelligence in maintaining stable balance during high stress experiences.
