MODULE 2 – COURSE OBJECTIVES and SUMMARY for CEUs

MODULE 2 – COURSE SUMMARY

In recent years, Somatic Awareness has become an important skill set for clinicians. Pioneering work of trauma clinicians such as Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk have demonstrated that our thoughts, emotions and instinctive physical responses all play an important role in regulating our responses to daily events, loss, anxiety, achievement and trauma. Successful treatment requires conscious practice which combines mental, emotional and body intelligence.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand the survival function of the “defense system” and the three operating systems of Idealization, Avoidance and the Mechanism itself.
  2. Learn the function of “dualism” in decision-making and practice observing it in real time.
  3. Learn how to strengthen clients’ internal resources before exploring their “avoidance” in order to avoid re-traumatization.
  4. Understand the cycling of changing moods.  Practice opening to different moods to improve self regulation.
  5. Learn the somatic responses of “fight, flight, freeze” and how to teach clients to manage them.
